Scientific or graphing calculator?

Scientific or graphing calculator? What should students purchase?

As they grow older their school supply lists will get shorter but it's not always cheaper.

One thing that could cause sticker shock to parents of middle and high school students is a special calculator. Most schools prefer students to are provided with their own personal scientific calculator. In the most rigorous math classes, like AP Calculus the use of a graphing calculator may be required.

But, what's the real difference? Scientific calculators can do things beyond subtraction, subtraction multiplication and division. Scientific calculators typically have specific buttons for parentheses trigonometric functions, exponents, inverses and pi -- as well as other functions.

A graphing calculator does even more. It'll come with a larger screen that allows you to enter a formula, then look at a graph of it.

Best Purchase's Geek Squad agent Derek Meister states that scientific calculatorscan run anywhere from $10 to $60. Calculators that graph are generally priced more, somewhere between $100 and $150.Should back to school students buy scientific or graphing calculators? (KOMO News)

However, Best Buy says you don't necessarily need to buy one and recommends seeking advice from your school before you buy.

Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's public relations and media supervisor She tells KOMO News each individual school has its own set of rules.

"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."

These calculators are perfect for AP testing. Weinberg is also of the opinion that schools have a system in place that allows students to use calculators like they do text books , if they're unable or choose not to buy their own.

For the Edmonds School district, calculators are treated in the same way as textbooks, in the sense of damages or losses, however, they don't have any fees to make use of.

One other option may already be available on their school laptop. Weinberg says in Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district also encourages teachers to utilize Desmos online calculators, as these are used for state exams too.

West Seattle family says school policies on quarantine are biased against those who have not been vaccinated

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was told to stay home following an incident when encountering someone who tested positive for COVID-19. The incident prompted family members to claim that their son was targeted and different treatment by school district officials since the boy has not been vaccine-free..

The 12-year-old student who attends Denny International Middle School was exposed to someone in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Officials at his school instructed that he should stay home for two weeks as he has not been vaccinated.

The family members of the victim have discovered that, had he been vaccinated the 7th grade student wouldn't be forced to miss class for as long as he didn't show evidence of the virus.

"My kid has no symptoms," stated Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's completely healthy. Why can't he just get an unbiased COVID test, and come back to school?"

Gollyhorn claimed that his son is being held to a different standard than students who have had their shots, and even in the event that he failed a COVID-19 result, the child isn't allowed to go back to school until the quarantine period of two weeks has expired.

However, those close to them who have been fully vaccinated, and who show no symptoms do not require to be quarantined and are able to return to classes, although they should be tested within three or five days after in order to be certain.

Gollyhorn declared it to be absurd and makes no sense.

"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" he said.

A spokesperson said Seattle Public Schools is following public health guidelines set by state officials.

Gollyhorn stated that the policy strips people of their freedom of choice. He added that his family does not trust vaccinations, and instances like this can only motivate him to push back.

The day that Seattle Public Schools started the school year on September. 1st, the district has reported 117 positive COVID-19 cases as well as Denny International Middle School has confirmed four cases of COVID-19 in the same time.

It's not clear how many staff as well as students have been advised that they must be quarantined due to exposures. However, absences from school are considered to be excused.
